Home Safety in a careproviders home is to be kept up to National
Standards, the following is a minimum checklist to meet the basic
requirements:
Throughout the home
q All
areas and surfaces of the home that are accessible to children should be
clean, free of hazards and in good repair
q Exposed
power points in all rooms used for Family Day Care have safety plugs
q Barrier
gates fitted to all stairs and hazardous areas
q Adequate
number of working smoke alarms
q All
glass doors, shower screens and low windows fitted with safety glass
Kitchen
q Electrical
appliances and leads short and close to the wall as possible
q The
following items are locked away or inaccessible to children:

knives and scissors out of reach
□ Detergents,
cleaners, dishwashing products
□ Medications
and vitamin pills
□ Other
poisons
□ Plastic
bags
q Refrigerator
in good working order
q Child
proof locks on cupboards
q Highchair
is stable and with five point harness attached
Living/Family Room
q Glass
furniture (coffee table, cabinet doors) are fitted with safety glass
q Free
standing furniture stabilised or unable to be pulled over (floor lamps,
fans)
q TV,
DVD and cords secured and inaccessible
q Access
to outside locked
q Exercise
equipment inaccessible
q Mats
secured and non-slip
Bathroom and Toilet
q The
following items are locked away or inaccessible to children:
